Sustainable Society Foundation

The SSI-2008, the two-yearly update of the SSI, has been launched.

Since the first publication of the SSI in 2006, now the first update is available: the SSI-2008. It presents the level of sustainability of 151 countries and shows progress over a period of two years. The good news is that the world has made a small step towards sustainability in this period. The world average SSI-score improved by 0.1 points to 5.7, on a scale of 0 to 10. However, the bad news is that with respect to issues which may be of decisive importance for this century like renewable energy and emission of greenhouse gases, the world is still in decline.

How sustainable is your country?

Presume you are a politician and someone says to you: 'You are talking a lot about sustainability. Please tell me how sustainable your country is and how it compares in this respect to your neighbouring countries.' Until recently it would have been hard to answer that question. The Sustainable Society Index - SSI - will provide you with the right answer. The SSI shows at a glance how sustainable a society is: what is the distance to sustainability, what is going well and where bottlenecks are experienced. The index is available for 151 countries and is updated every 2 years.

See on the datasheet how your country is performing.
